At Queen City Engineering & Design, PLLC, innovation doesn’t happen in isolation—it thrives through collaboration. By partnering with leading universities, we bridge the gap between academic research and real-world application, accelerating design innovation and delivering practical, manufacturable solutions.

Our recent collaborations with University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NC A&T) highlight how industry and academia can work together to solve complex engineering challenges while fostering the next generation of talent.

Advancing Safety: UNCC Battery Testing Puncture Rig Enclosure

As battery technology continues to evolve, so does the need for robust and safe testing environments. In partnership with UNCC, Queen City Engineering & Design supported the development of a puncture rig enclosure designed specifically for battery testing applications.

This project focused on:

  • Designing a containment system capable of withstanding high-risk battery failure scenarios

  • Incorporating safety features to protect operators and surrounding equipment

  • Ensuring manufacturability and compliance with industry standards

Our team brought real-world engineering expertise to the project—translating conceptual designs into practical, build-ready solutions. By collaborating with university researchers, we were able to refine the enclosure design to meet both experimental needs and production feasibility.

Enhancing Mobility Innovation: NC A&T Autonomous Vehicle Fabrication

In collaboration with NC A&T, we contributed to fabrication improvements for an autonomous vehicle platform, specifically focusing on the vehicle’s exterior systems.

Key contributions included:

  • Improving structural integrity and manufacturability of exterior components

  • Optimizing material selection for durability and performance

  • Streamlining fabrication processes to support iterative development

This partnership allowed us to support cutting-edge mobility research while applying our expertise in sheet metal design and product development. The result: a more refined, reliable platform that better supports ongoing autonomous vehicle advancements.

Why Industry-Academic Partnerships Matter

Collaborations like these are more than just projects—they are strategic investments in innovation. By working alongside universities, Queen City Engineering & Design is able to:

  • Accelerate innovation cycles by combining academic research with practical engineering execution

  • Develop real-world solutions that move beyond theory into production-ready designs

  • Support workforce development by engaging with emerging engineering talent

  • Stay at the forefront of technology in industries such as energy storage and autonomous systems

Looking Ahead

As engineering challenges grow more complex, partnerships between industry and academia will play an increasingly vital role. At Queen City Engineering & Design, we are committed to continuing these collaborations—delivering impactful solutions while helping shape the future of engineering innovation.

If your organization or institution is interested in partnering with us for design, prototyping, or product development, we welcome the opportunity to collaborate and build what’s next together.
